I am often amazed at the the amount of misinformation about shoulder replacements. There is a fear that the recovery will be horribly painful and take many months. The complication risk with shoulder replacements is about one half the complication rate with hip or knee replacements. In fact, if the replacement is done by a high volume surgeon (more than 50 per year), the risks of complications and bad results drops another 50%. Most shoulder replacements are a much easier recovery than knee replacements and are about similar to hip replacements. The recovery is also much easier than rotator cuff repairs.
Check out my patient 4 weeks after the surgery. She is not an outlier. This is a common finding after a simple shoulder replacement.
